When I embarked on my journey of better cooking I never dreamed I would be making Homemade Tortillas. I knew some people could do it but I guess I never gave myself any credit. It was not until I came across this post over at Chickens in the Road that I seriously considered giving tortillas a try. She made them seem so easy. I made these tortillas last week and made bean burritos with them.
Here is how it went:
Ingredients
3 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon salt
1/4 cup shortening
1 cup lukewarm water
I put the flour and salt into a bowl and then cut the shortening in with a pastry cutter. I added the water and stirred until a thick dough formed. I kneaded the dough until it was good and pliable. I let the dough rest on the counter top for twenty minutes or so.
I then formed twelve little dough balls.
Cute little dough balls just waiting to be made into tortillas.
t got my wax paper out and got to work making the tortillas. Using lots of flour to prevent sticking I rolled the dough balls one by one as thinly as I could get them without tearing.
I stacked all the tortillas with the wax paper in between each one and had them all at the ready for cooking time.
I heated my pan to medium-high heat without any oil or butter. These are cooked dry and for about 15-20 seconds on each side.
Here is one tortilla just about to come out of the skillet.
Maybe I left this on a bit too long.
As each tortilla was done cooking I pulled it off the skillet and let it cool for a minute or so on a plate and then I put it into a gallon sized freezer bag. As each hot tortilla goes into the plastic bag the steam creates enough condensation to keep the tortillas moist and soft. You could also use dish towels or aluminum foil.
Here they are all ready for the dinner table. YUMMY!
These tortillas were so good and fresh tasting. How could they not be good with such a simple ingredient list? We ate some of them plain, with homemade refried beans, and rolled up with cheese. So, very good!!
I cannot wait to try this recipe for Jalapeno Cheddar Tortillas next.

i LOVE homemade tortillas! once you have had them the store bought ones are no longer worth buying. they taste awful!
OK – you’ve convinced me. I WILL attempt homemade tortillas again! If I can just get past the pie crusts tomorrow – I’m so rolling-pin-challenged…
We made them at a new years eve party once at our house when we were very young and in college. The BEST party ever! Everyone tried to make the torillas in the shape of their state lol. Great times. Perhaps we will attempt this again this year, we are serving Mexican buffett.
I don’t cook with trans fats (shortening). Do you think these would work just as well with butter or margarine?
I believe you can use lard in place of the shortening. Would that help??
Those look really great… I love to eat things homemade, and this is one I’ve never tried making. It looks easy enough though? I think I will give it a try.
